Longwood Medical, Coolidge Corner
Longwood Medical area borders the Brookline and Boston city lines from the Fenway/Riverway and Frederick Law Olmstead’s Emerald Necklace Park in Boston west to Harvard St. and Coolidge Corner and Southeast to Brookline Village including the Cottage Farm Estate area.
Brookline is a sanctuary from the busy thoroughfares of Boston with quiet streets, neighborhood parks, notable schools and unparalleled access to downtown Boston and Medical area. The area evolved from David Sears II 500 acre purchase in 1820 for development of “English Cottages” in the country to what is today one of the most desirable enclaves adjacent to Boston and the Longwood Medical Area. LMA is one of the largest employers in the state of Massachusetts including world-renowned medical institutions: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Childrens Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center and many research facilities. Many educational institutions are also located in this area includingSimmons College, Emmanuel College, Mass College of Pharmacy, Mass College of Art, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Dental School, and several other academic institutions. During the early 20th century many brick rowhouses and apartment buildings were built along Beacon, Harvard and St. Paul Sts. A growing number of these properties have been renovated and converted to upscale condominiums with easy access to the MBTA’s C & D Green line service to downtown Boston and bus service to Harvard Square in Cambridge. Residents enjoy evening discussions at Brookline’s well-known bookstore, dining at over 40 different ethnic restaurants, or leisurely walks through Halls Pond Sanctuary – truly a place to call home!.
